General Information

Getting Here

Horizon is based at Triple B Ranch, an easy two and a half hour drive north of Johannesburg International Airport. You may choose to make your own way to us by hire car, or we can arrange for a private transfer.

Visas and Health

To enter South Africa, you must be in possession of a passport that is valid for at least six months after your return date. The Waterberg is classified as a malaria free area, but please check with your doctor or travel bureau for the latest advice.

Weather

The hottest season is summer, from November to March. The rainy season extends from late November to February, with short showers in the late afternoon, and an occasional evening thunderstorm. The winter months of June, July and August are warm and dry, but evenings are chilly so it is advisable to bring warm clothing.

Riding Ability Required

The safaris are only available to intermediate and experienced riders, as we will be covering large distances each day and riding through rhino country. Riding time each day will vary from 3-6 hours. The Horizon Horseback Adventures holidays are suitable for all riders, from novice to highly experienced. All rides are accompanied by at least two guides. Some hard hats are supplied and while not obligatory for normal riding activities, they are required for polocrosse and cross-country jumping.

What to bring

We suggest bringing the following:

  • Sun protection cream factor 20 or higher.
  • Most of our clients choose not to wear hard hats, but due to the heat please do bring a wide brimmed sunhat.
  • Short boots and chaps.  Long rubber boots are not advised. Handmade full-length chaps can be purchased on arrival at Triple B Ranch. Click here for details of how to pre-order.
  • Light weight rain coat.
  • Spare camera batteries and plenty of film.

Other Information

Horizon has been in operation since 1993. The lodge takes a maximum of ten guests with a minimum age of twelve years, except during our special 'families' months of July and August, when we take up to twelve guests (six adults) and cater for families with children of any age. Click here for more details. All safaris are booked for a minimum of two people and a maximum of eight.
