Family Holidays

During the months of July and August, Horizon runs a special option for family vacations when we will accept children of all ages. Past experience has shown that Horizon at Triple B Ranch is the perfect setting for families whose children enjoy riding. We offer lots of exciting riding activities in a safe environment, which will keep the whole family entertained throughout their stay. To accommodate families during these two months, we will accept children of all ages (our normal age limit is 12 years old). We also offer a reduced rate for children under the age of 14, and we increase the maximum number of guests to 12 (maximum 6 adults).

Example itinerary

The following itinerary is an example of the kind of activities that are available for families with children. Please remember, as with all Horizon itineraries, this serves only as an example and is not meant to be seen as a timetable. The range of activities can also be tailored to the level of riding ability in the group and can include a number of lessons if needed.

DAY 1: Arrive in time for lunch, after which small groups go for a ride in the game area on the ranch in search of game species such as giraffe and zebra. The ride will finish at sunset with sundowner drinks.

DAY 2: The group can be split into adults and children. The children will go off to muster cattle and try out cutting, while the adults ride to the main farmhouse at Boschdraai for a tour of the farm school and crèche.  After lunch those interested can take on the staff at a baseball challenge. Others may prefer to rest and enjoy an African siesta.  In the afternoon, there is a chance to try the cross-country course or ride around the hippo pool.

Splitting the group into teams of three, basic instruction is followed by a first game. Afterwards, cool off with a swim with the horses. After lunch, some of the party may like to visit a living museum nearby where orphan black and white rhinos and other rehabilitated animals can be seen.

DAY 4: The group embarks on a two day wilderness safari to a local game reserve. The ride takes several hours across interesting and varied terrain. The group arrives at the tranquil stone and thatched bush camp in time for lunch, followed by a siesta at the pool and afternoon tea. The ride in the afternoon is to a spectacular viewpoint where sundowners are served. Riding with wilderbeest on horse riding safari

DAY 5: Following a light breakfast, it is time to explore the reserve and go in search of a wide variety of game, including white rhino. This is a wonderful experience, where the family will learn about the signs of wild animals and the medicinal values of the bushes and trees. At midmorning, there is a rest period and time for a refreshing swim in the river. After an early afternoon tea it is time to set out for Triple B Ranch in time for supper.

DAY 6: Today there is a chance to go on an excursion to one of the local "Big Five" game reserves for a game drive, or perhaps go on an elephant-back ride. This may be followed by a visit to local curio shops. In the afternoon a second game of polocrosse can be enjoyed.

DAY 7: During the morning guests may enjoy western games – an adult form of gymkhana that can be enjoyed by young and old alike. The group will be divided into teams that will compete against each other in events such as barrel racing, pole bending and the flag race. In the afternoon riders have the opportunity to go and search for game in the game area, or to enjoy a longer, faster ride along the many miles of sandy tracks on Triple B Ranch.

DAY 8: Teams compete in a horseback treasure hunt. The clues lead to a champagne breakfast in the bush. This is followed by a swim with the horses in front of the lodge. The afternoon ride provides one last chance to see a giraffe or hippo on horseback. Swimming on horseback

DAY 9: Lunch and a transfer back to the airport or other chosen destination follow a last ride of choice.
